FURTHER STRATEGIC APPOINTMENT TO
DOWNER EDI BOARD
The Board of Downer EDI is delighted to announce the appointment of Peter Coates to the position of Non-Executive Director, effective 30 October 2008.
Downer EDI Chairman, Peter Jollie said Mr Coates would bring to the Board extensive experience and expertise gained from more than 40 years in various global mining industries.
“Peter is a well respected and highly-credentialed individual, having held the position of Chief Executive Xstrata Coal since the company’s inception as Glencore Coal in 1994 and its transition to Enex Resources in 2001, which was acquired by Xstrata Plc in 2002,” Mr Jollie said.
“In addition to his considerable coal industry experience, Peter has also occupied senior positions in other commodity industries including nickel, iron ore and bauxite. His strong engineering and mining background combined with his previous Board experience will be highly beneficial to our business,” he said.
Peter Coates said his appointment to the Board of Downer EDI comes at a time when the Company is gearing for significant growth and he is thrilled to be joining such a well-regarded and progressive Board.
“This is a great opportunity for me personally, and having only recently stepped down from a long career in mining and engineering, I believe I can provide a valuable contribution to Downer EDI,” Mr Coates commented.
“Downer EDI has an exceptional executive team and under the leadership of Geoff Knox and the Board, I believe the Company is well positioned to take advantage of the extensive opportunities presented by the carbon emissions reduction scheme and the strong market position of each of its divisions,” he said.
Peter is a member of the NSW Ministerial Minerals Advisory Council. He is past Chairman of the Minerals Council of Australia; former Director of the New South Wales Minerals Council and the Australia Coal Association and former member of the Queensland Clean Coal Council. He worked closely with government as a member of the APEC 2007 Business Consultative Group and the former Prime Minister’s Emissions Trading Task Group.
Peter was appointed Chairman of Minara Resources in April 2008 and joined the Board of Santos in March 2008. He also remains as Chairman of Xstrata Australia, a role he took on in April 2008 after he stepped down as Chief Executive of Xstrata Coal.
