Andrew Harmos, founding partner of law firm Harmos Horton Lusk, is taking over as chairman of sharemarket operator NZX's board effective today.

NZX said Harmos, a director since 2002, will replace ABN Amro New Zealand chief executive Simon Allen as its chairman.

Harmos was a partner at Russell McVeagh for 16 years before setting up Harmos Horton Lusk in 2002. At the Auckland-based firm Harmos specialises in takeover advice and structuring, securities offerings, acquisitions and sales, plus strategic and board corporate and legal advice.

Harmos said NZX held "many of the keys" to ensure a strong domestic environment for companies to source capital and grow.

"To do this effectively we need to ensure our investment structures, policy settings, capital markets infrastructure and people are, and remain, world class," Harmos said.

Harmos is also a director of Westfield New Zealand Group and Elevation Capital Management.
