Refining NZ today announced it has been granted a 35-year resource consent to operate both refinery and import terminal operations at its Marsden Point site. This resource consent underlines Refining NZ's long-term commitment to the site, and the wider Northland region. Refining NZ has undertaken an extensive assessment of the environmental impacts associated with continued operations at Marsden Point. This included a detailed assessment of the effects of our activities on the harbour, land, air quality and the surrounding community. Naomi James, CEO of Refining NZ, said "Marsden Point is the home of Refining NZ and a strategic site with natural deep-water harbour, established marine facility, electricity and gas connections and proximity to a large population base. I am pleased that the significant role that we play in New Zealand's fuel supply chain will continue on our site." Through the consent application process, Refining NZ also built upon its strong partnership with local Iwi. This involved agreeing conditions that address cultural issues along with establishing mechanisms to ensure Refining NZ and Iwi are able to work collaboratively on projects to improve the coastal environment in the vicinity of Marsden Point. We thank our Iwi partners for working alongside us throughout this process. As a condition of the resource consent, Refining NZ has committed to continuing to ensure the site maintains the current high level of environmental standards. Environmental measures at Marsden Point include operation of a groundwater hydraulic containment system and hydrocarbon recovery program reducing the extent of legacy contamination over time as part of our ongoing remediation of the site. As a condition of the resource consent, Refining NZ has also committed to work with the Northland Regional Council ahead of time to plan for an orderly wind-up of operations, should refinery and import terminal operations on site cease in the future, to ensure on-going compliance with the conditions of the consent. Refining NZ is continuing to assess the potential future option to shift to an import terminal operation. Refining NZ continues to work closely with the local, regional and national authorities and agencies to ensure any future transition is smooth and the impact on its people and the region is minimized. No decisions have been made on this step. Should a decision be taken to proceed with a conversion, no further resource consent application would be required as the consent granted for our current operations covers the activities of an import terminal.
