Statement Regarding BPA Fishing

21/01/2020, 12:28 NZDT, GENERAL

21 January 2020 NZX Continuous Disclosure Statement Regarding BPA Fishing Today Sanford pleaded guilty to three charges in the Invercargill District Court of fishing in a Benthic Protection Area (BPA). These charges reflect incidents where one of our vessels inadvertently strayed into a BPA while fishing. Sanford is confident the incursions were a mistake and in no way intentional. We cannot provide further detail at this stage of the legal process, although we look forward to being able to say more publicly at the appropriate time. No matter what the outcome of the process now underway, we wish to make it clear that for Sanford, respecting BPAs is very important and it is always our aim to do the right thing on the water. We have been open with and supportive of investigators during their enquiries around the alleged incidents. Sanford is determined to avoid such mistakes in future and in recent months, technology has been developed and adopted by us that will create an electronic fence system around sensitive areas which our fishing vessels should avoid. This will sound an alarm if any of our vessels approaches a protected area. If the skipper does not respond to this alarm, the shore-based vessel manager will be alerted, so that he or she can immediately investigate and take steps to ensure that the vessel does not fish in a protected area.
