Meridian confirms no decision yet on Southland Smelter

Meridian Energy has confirmed that Rio Tinto, global mining giant and owner of the Tiwai Point Aluminium Smelter, has not yet provided any update on the Strategic Review of the Smelter. Rio Tinto announced in October 2019 it would undertake a Strategic Review of its New Zealand operations, indicating it would provide an update by the end of the first quarter of 2020. Meridian has worked with the Smelter owners to offer amendments to its existing electricity contract, including options for two different tranches of volume.
