December 2020 Monthly traffic update January 2021 preview -70.3%. Auckland Airport total passenger volumes decreased by 70.3% in December 2020 versus last year. International passengers (excl. transits) were down 97.3%, transit passengers were down 95.9% and domestic passengers were down by 32.2%. Key Points: o The decline in total passengers for December 2020 reflects the impact of the travel restrictions imposed by the New Zealand Government in response to COVID-19. The closure of the New Zealand border from 20 March 2020 to all but New Zealand citizens and permanent residents has had a significant impact on international services. o Transit passenger numbers in December 2020 were 20.3% down on November 2020 reflecting the Chinese Government introducing new health testing requirements for COVID-19 from 7 November 2020 restricting international transit from New Zealand to China. o Domestic passenger numbers in December 2020 were 7.5% up on November 2020 reflecting the increase in domestic capacity during the holiday period, mainly driven by Air New Zealand adding 16,000 seats onto its domestic network during the month. The closure of the New Zealand border from 20 March 2020 to all but New Zealand citizens and permanent residents has had a significant impact on international services. o Quarantine-free one-way travel to Australia was permitted to New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory and Victoria, with Queensland opening on 7 January 2021. However, the Australian Government suspended quarantine-free travel to Australia from New Zealand on 25 January for six days following active cases within the New Zealand community. o Quarantine-free travel for Cook Islanders between Rarotonga and New Zealand commenced on 21 January 2021.
