July 2021 Monthly traffic update and August 2021 preview 59.7% Auckland Airport total passenger volumes increased by 59.7% in July 2021 versus last year. International passengers (excl. transits) were up 332.4%, transit passengers were down 84.8% and domestic passengers were up by 46.3%. Key Points: o The increase in total international passengers for July 2021 reflected the operation of trans-Tasman quarantine-free travel for most of the month, albeit quarantine-free travel was progressively paused on a state by state basis throughout July 2021, followed by an 8 week suspension of the entire Tasman Bubble on 23 July 2021. o Domestic services for July 2021 were up on the prior year equivalent reflecting increased domestic activity due to school holidays and a boost from international passengers transferring to domestic flights. o Please refer to Appendix 1 for a comparison with pre-COVID July 2018. August 2021 Monthly traffic update preview 68.4% Auckland Airport total passenger volumes increased by 68.4% in August 2021 versus the prior year. International passengers (excl. transits) were up 61.6%, transit passengers were down 94.3% and domestic passengers were up by 74.5%. Key Points: o The increase in total international passengers for August 2021 reflects more international airlines operating than in August 2020. But following a community outbreak of the delta variant, New Zealand went into alert level 4 lockdown on 17 August 2021. This in effect suspended quarantine free travel with Australia and the Cook Islands until further notice. o Prior to the move to Alert Level 4, domestic services for August 2021 were up on the prior year reflecting increased domestic activity over the peak winter season. o Please refer to Appendix 2 for comparison with pre-COVID August 2018.
