First Quarter 2023 Trade Volumes

Napier Port (NZX.NPH) today releases trade volume data for the first quarter ended 31 December 2022. Compared to the same period in the prior year, trade volumes increased 12.8% for containerised cargo and decreased 0.5% for bulk cargo. Container Services Total container volumes increased by 12.8% to 60k TEU from 53k TEU in the same period a year ago. Underlying cargo laden, or 'full', container volumes (i.e. excluding empties and other container movements) were in line with the prior year while total empty and other container movement container volumes increased 32.1%. Dry export cargo increased by 6.9% to 17k TEU from 16k TEU in the same period a year ago. Small increases were observed for wood pulp, due to improved container equipment & shipping availability, and for canned/other food & beverage. Reefer export cargo volumes were in line with the prior year. Containerised imports increased by 12.7% to 29k TEU from 26k TEU. The increase was driven by empty container imports increasing 26.6% to 20k TEU in advance of seasonal produce exports and due to improved container equipment availability. Dry imports decreased 9.5% to 8k TEU on lower general cargo and fertiliser. Other container movements, including DLRs and transhipped containers, increased to 6k TEU from 2k TEU due to higher container repositioning activity in the quarter. Container vessel calls were down to 47 ships from 53 ships in the prior year due to continued shipping service schedule disruptions. Bulk Cargo Total Bulk Cargo volume of 0.98 million tonnes was in line with the same period a year ago. Charter vessel calls increased to 92 from 87 in the same quarter a year ago. Cruise Services Cruise vessels calls during the first quarter were 20 compared to nil in the same period in the prior year. Assuming no further booking cancellations, Napier Port now has actual calls plus remining bookings totalling 81 cruise vessels for this cruise season, down from the 87 bookings reported earlier.
