2026 Financial Year Trade Volumes
Napier Port (NZX.NPH) today releases trade volume data for the fourth quarter and financial year ended 30 September 2026. Total annual containerised cargo volume was unchanged and bulk cargo volume decreased by 2.7%, compared to the same period a year ago. For the fourth quarter, containerised cargo volume decreased by 3.3% and bulk cargo volume decreased by 3.2%. Chief Executive Todd Dawson said: “Total container volume for the year consolidated in line with the prior year with a strengthened cargo mix as a result of favourable growing conditions and additional seasonal container shipping services. Growth in full containers was led by another record apple export season and supported by higher meat exports and increased imports of paper products and fertiliser. Bulk cargo volumes were lower for the year on lower log exports and cement and oil product imports. This reflects the continuation of subdued economic conditions and geopolitical challenges creating higher costs for exporters and importers.” Container Services Total container volumes for the fourth quarter decreased 3.3% to 55k TEU from 57k TEU in the same period a year ago. Full container volumes increased 5.2%, and empty and other container movements decreased 14.7%. Total annual container volume of 250k TEU was the same as the prior year. Full container volumes increased 5%, and empty and other container movements decreased 5.6%. Containerised exports for the year of 115k TEU increased 1.8% from 113k TEU in the prior year. Dry exports increased 3.3% to 54k TEU from 52k TEU on higher export timber and paper products, partially offset by lower wood pulp exports. Reefer exports increased 5% to 54k TEU from 51k TEU due to higher export apples, meat and other chilled produce. Containerised imports increased by 2.7% to 116k TEU from 113k TEU in the prior year, primarily due to higher containerised paper products and fertiliser imports, and higher imported empty containers required for export cargo. Other container movements for the year decreased by 20.5% to 20k TEU, driven by lower tranship activity and partially offset by higher DLR volumes generated from additional container vessel calls. Container vessel calls for the year increased to 289 from 264 calls last year on new services calling at Napier Port. Bulk Cargo Total bulk cargo volume decreased 3.2% for the fourth quarter to 0.9 million tonnes and decreased 2.7% for the year to 3.3 million tonnes, compared to the same periods a year ago. Log export volumes increased 30k tonnes, or 4.4%, to 699k tonnes for the fourth quarter and decreased by 77k tonnes, or 2.8%, to 2,622k tonnes for the year. Other bulk exports increased 2k tonnes for the fourth quarter and increased 31k tonnes for the year, primarily due to higher coastal fertiliser movements. Bulk import volumes decreased 62k tonnes, or 26.4%, to 172k tonnes for the fourth quarter and decreased by 46k tonnes, or 7.2%, to 589k tonnes for the year. Lower import volumes were primarily due to lower oil products and cement cargo. Charter vessel calls increased to 69 from 66 for the fourth quarter and decreased to 246 from 248 for the year. Cruise Services The 2026 season saw 55 cruise vessel calls compared to 78 calls for the 2025 season. Further information is included within the attachment.
